Lufthansa orders Fairchild 728JETs.

After months of negotiations over design details and unit costs, Lufthansa/Lufthansa Cityline has placed a $1.6 billion order for Fairchild Aerospace 728JETs, an order that most likely will propel forward an aircraft program that some observers had written off. The airline also has taken options for 60 additional aircraft. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2002.

"As launch customer for the 728JET program, we are extremely pleased that such a successful and well-respected airline is the lead customer for our new product line," beamed Fairchild Aerospace Chairman and CEO Carl Albert. Lufthansa Chairman and CEO Jurgen Weber was equally ebullient: "The 728JET offers a level of comfort--in seat width, headroom and overhead storage bins--that passengers otherwise experience only in larger jets. …
