Lufthansa blamed "difficult operating conditions ... extreme weather conditions and revised air corridors in [traffic-clogged] western Europe" for a sharp 61% decline in first-quarter profits to Dm63 million ($34 million). For all of 1999, Lufthansa expects pre-tax profit to drop 20% to around Dm2 billion owing to what CFO Karl-Ludwig Kley called a tougher economic climate for airlines. …
