The German government approved plans to vastly expand outlying, underused Berlin Schoenefeld into a major new single airport for the capital to be called Berlin Brandenburg international. It would be the country's first privately financed and operated airport.

The project, to be completed in 2007, will lead to shutting down Berlin's other two airports, Tegel in 2007 and Tempelhof in 2002. …
