UAL Corp.

UAL Corp. named President and COO James E. Goodwin to succeed Gerald Greenwald as chairman and CEO of the parent of United Airlines effective July 1999, when Greenwald's five-year contract to lead the company expires.

Goodwin was named to his current position last Sept. following the resignation of John Edwardson, who left the airline when it became clear that the pilot and machinist unions would not support his ascension to the top post.

Goodwin, 54, joined United in 1967 and has served in most areas of the airline. He was widely perceived as the union favorite as the selection process narrowed to a two-horse race between the insider and outsider Louis Hughes of General Motors Corp. …
