Regional aircraft manufacturers continue to stretch the envelope.

Regional aircraft manufacturer Embraer has announced the pre-launch of a new pair of regional jets in the 70-90-seat category, the ERJ-170 and ERJ-190. Meanwhile, British Aerospace Regional Aircraft has selected the AlliedSignal AS977-1A to power its new Avro family of regional jets. And BAe's proposal to acquire Spanish aerospace concern CASA may involve a plan to build a 70-seat regional jet, according to sources within both manufacturers.

These announcements appear to reinforce the prediction that regional aircraft will continue to play an integral role in the airline industry.

At Embraer, the decision to pre-launch two entirely new aircraft to add to its existing 35seat and 50-seat RJs was made following an in-depth market study of 46 Regional airlines that represent 55% of the current regional aviation market worldwide. …
