Ansett has made significant headway in its recovery program, posting a 48% increase in after-tax profit to A$61.6 million ($39.2 million) for the first half of the 1998-99 financial year. Higher domestic yields, lower unit costs flowing from a push for internal efficiencies, and a much-improved performance from the international operation contributed to the increase.

Revenue slipped slightly to A$l.7 billion as a result of the sale of non-core businesses and a rationalization of overseas and some local services.

Ansett Australia, the domestic arm of the group, was the major contributor to the profit, with 57% higher earnings of A$104. …
