American's wrong-way turn.(Brief Article)

American Airlines thought its purchase of Reno Air for $124 million last Dec. was a shortcut back to the West Coast markets it abandoned earlier in the decade. Instead, it was merely a quick trip to the labor battlefield where the carrier has spent so much time in recent years (see also Editorial, page 9).

American's pilots. angry that AA did not integrate Reno Air immediately into its operations and merge the pilot lists, as seemingly called for tinder their contract, staged massive sick-outs during early Feb., causing the airline to cancel thousands of flights.

The pilots, who long have resented AA's marketing relationships with Reno Air and Midway Airlines, claimed the delay was part of a larger scheme to outsource their jobs to the lower-cost airline. …
