Airbus Industrie--the Widebody Twin

Along the way to creating itself m 1970, Airbus Industrie created an aircraft design that would have far-reaching implications: The widebody twinjet. This Airbus innovation, originally conceived for short-haul, high-density routes, has become the high-efficiency design of choice for all but the biggest aircraft and the longest routes.

From the original design came several variations of the A300, then the A310 and finally the A330. Boeing could not ignore airlines' enthusiasm for a twin-aisle twinjet and produced the 767, then the 777. The advent of ETOPS 15 years ago proved that reliability could be built into the airplanes and engines, opened new markets and moved the design into the mainstream. …
