For a regional airline, surviving in Europe is a feat unto itself. Thriving in this very competitive, restrictive environment, where operating costs are the highest in the World, truly is noteworthy. Tyrolean Airways of Innsbruck, Austria, is just such a carrier and our Regional Airline of the Year for 1998.

Although wholly owned by Austrian Airlines since March, 1998, Tyrolean made its mark as a privately owned airline and remains autonomous managerially. Our regional airline winner has been consistently profitable, inventive and growth-oriented since beginning operations in April, 1980, with a single 48-seat de Havilland Dash 7 on an Innsbruck-Vienna-Zurich route. Today, Tyrolean, which employs more than 900, flies to 37 destinations throughout Europe with a 31-aircraft fleet of turboprops and regional jets, with an average aircraft age of less than three years. …
