In selecting Delta Air Lines as Airline of the Year, ATW is recognizing a company that in a sense is completing a long and painful journey of discovery from which it has emerged stronger and wiser. Delta's record earnings of $1 billion for its fiscal year ended June 30, 1998, and its record $327 million profit in the first quarter of the current financial year testify to the ultimate success of that journey, just as its rapidly improving service product demonstrates a commitment to restoring a name long synonymous with excellence in that regard.

Under President and CEO Leo F. Mullin, Delta has shed the last vestiges of its insularity and reached outside for new leaders and ideas. Last summer's hiring of Lufthansa President Frederick Reid as executive vice president and chief marketing officer, and the recent decision to eliminate 3-class service as a nicety that no longer can be justified, illustrate these changes. …
