U.S. airline passenger traffic rose 2.7% in Oct. despite flat international traffic, ATA reported, but a surprisingly large decline in the Oct. average domestic yield sent Wall Street analysts scurrying to the "sell" side of the street, as concern rose that the long-forecast downturn was arriving.

Domestic RPMs rose 3.6% in Oct., compared with the year-ago period. vs. a 2.4% rise in capacity (ASMs). Load factor rose 0.9 points to 69.1%.

International RPMs rose only .3 points compared with Oct., 1997, while ASMs rose 1.8% and load factor fell 1.1 points to 72. …
