Local politics still are a barrier to establishing a truly global industry

Philippine Airlines' fight for survival is being played out at this writing, likely still will be in process when this is read and may continue for some time.

When the Asian economic crisis came upon us, it was assumed that in order to survive, a number of the region's airlines would be forced to adopt standards of discipline found elsewhere in the industry. The options were said to be going out of business or being consumed by a larger, more efficient competitor, another step toward a truly global industry.
