OBERPFAFFENHOFEN, Germany--Fairchild Dornier, hard-pressed by competitors Bombardier Aerospace and Embraer, intends to develop a family of regional jets, with capacity ranging from 30 to 90 seats. The far-reaching goal was outlined here at the formal rollout of the sleek turboprop derivative, the 328JET, for which Fairchild Dornier expects orders to grow steadily.

"It's what the market is demanding of us," declared Earl Robinson, president of Fairchild Dornier's regional/business aircraft division, speaking of a family of products.

With three successful flights, totaling 6 hr., 25 min., the new 328JET was introduced to a crowd of more than 2,000 at a festive public debut at the Fairchild Dornier plant near Munich. …
