Regionals set the pace.(regional aircraft manufacturers)

The regional aircraft manufacturers, main players in a market where being able to maintain position is considered a victory, were the stars of the Singapore air show.

Embraer of Brazil, whose RJ-145 regional jet was one of the few commercial aircraft to make the trip to Asian Aerospace, led the way with announced firm orders for 20 new 37-seat RJ-135s from U.S. Regional Business Express. Also announced were firm orders for 20 EMB-120 Brasilias and nine RJ-145s from United Express carriers SkyWest Airlines and Trans States Airlines of St. Louis, respectively.

The last-minute announced sale to BEX also includes 40 options for RJ-135s for a total value of approximately $810 million. Delivery of the first 37-seat jet is scheduled for October, 1999, with subsequent deliveries to follow one per month.

SkyWest's 20 Brasilias will be used to bolster its United Express operation in California begun by an agreement where SkyWest will establish a new hub at San Francisco, serving several markets in Northern California, beginning in June. …
