A new and interesting innovation in cabin technology is the seat-belt air-bag system under development by AmSafe of Phoenix. The air-bag will protect a passenger from head injury by deploying a 'pillow" from the passenger's lap belt during an aircraft accident. Because the airbag deploys away from the passenger, the company notes, it is safe for a passenger of any size.

The airbag is folded into a sheath on the fixed half of the seatbelt. The air-bag is deployed only when multiple g-sensors set off an inflation device stored completely under the seat. The underseat system and the belt combined weigh less than 1.5 lb., and can be retrofitted on any aircraft seat in minutes, according to AmSafe. …
