The "oneworld" global marketing alliance among American Airlines, British Airways, Canadian Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Qantas announced Sept. 21, gives the already-aligned carriers arguably the most powerful alliance in the world. But only if the proposed code-sharing alliance between American and BA can he accomplished at a reasonable cost, a less likely possibility following the breakdown in U.S.-U.K. bilateral negotiations last month (see next item).

The partners stress that oneworld itself "is not a code-sharing alliance, although some members already code share with one another." Oneworld is "a global brand alliance ... aiming to create a worldwide route network."

The partners pledged to cooperate in a variety of areas, including coordinating flight schedules, airport lounges and gate facilities, frequent-flier programs and eventually joint purchasing and the like. …
