Pilot groups at Northwest Airlines, Air Canada and Delta Air Lines flexed their muscles at the end of the summer, shutting down the former two for extended periods and causing Delta to call off its proposed code-sharing pact with United Airlines (see next items).

Air Canada's 2,000 pilots struck on Sept. 2, and the airline ceased flying. A new 2-year contract was ratified Sept. 13, and the airline resumed limited service the next day. …
