FIRE SOURCE SOUGHT IN MD-11 CRASH.

Canadian accident investigators are trying to determine whether a seven fire-possibly in the avionics bay--ultimately led to the crash of a Swissair MD-Il on Sept. 2 with the loss of all 229 on board.

Swissair Flight 111 took off from New York JFK at 8:17 p.m. local time, en route to Geneva. Some 57 mm. later, the cockpit crew radioed: 'Pan, pan, pan. Smoke in cockpit," and requested immediate return to Boston.

ATC recommended Halifax because it was closer and the crew accepted it. At that point, it was at 33,000 ft. …
