CAAC/Lufthansa joint technical venture established

Lufthansa is engaged in a number of major projects in China involving assistance to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and the establishment and operation of a "Beijing Lufthansa Center' in the Chinese capital. The overall program to assist and cooperate with the Chinese is under the supervision of Wolfgang Weinert, deputy head of corporate strategy in Lufthansa's head office. Werner Hupe, based in Beijing, is general manager of Lufthansa's joint technical venture project with CAAC.

It is not the first time that the German air transport industry has helped the Chinese. In 1930 Lufthansa provided technical assistance and aircraft for a German-Chinese airline called Eurasia, which operated successfully until World War II.

The new Lufthansa joint venture will get under way in the first quarter of 1988 and will involve an investment of $190 million over a period of 15 years. …
