Business is up, but average fare is down

Like the airlines, the travel agent industry is enjoying a healthy increase in business so far in 1987, Air Transport World's annual survey of travel agent commissions paid by world carriers indicates.

Because some of the 32 airlines responding to the survey provided partial data, only the most general of conclusions can be drawn. But the survey does reflect double-digit growth in passengers, revenue passenger-kilometers, passenger revenues and commissions in the first half of this year.

However, the survey also shows evidence of a significant drop in the average fare paid by each passenger compared to the 1986 period, a decline in yield, and a corresponding increase in the percentage of passengers flying on discount fares. …
