Lufthansa/Swissair offer new pilot training program

Lufthansa is introducing a new concept in pilot training with what it claims to be the first use worldwide of full-flight simulators in training young people for their first license. Up to now, airline officials said here, simulators have been used exclusively for airline pilot training.

At this writing, two British Rediffusion Simulation Ltd simulators based on the flight profile of the Piper Cheyenne IIIA trainer aircraft had been installed at the Lufthansa training base here, with a third due at any time. These link in with four new Cheyenne IIIA aircraft which the airline has ordered. Two of these had arrived at this writing.

Captain Dieter Harms, head of the Lufthansa Pilot School, said that Lufthansa and its partners Swissair and the Luftwaffe opted, in what is known as the "Futura' concept, for the new approach for a variety of reasons. These included that the computerized cockpits of the new-technology generation of airliners, like the Airbus A310, A320 and A340, and the Boeing 747-400, meant that even basic training of future pilots needed to be adapted to familiarize them with the technical and conceptual principles of the new flight-management systems. …
