Russian engine makers have entered the maintenance end-- at the overhaulers' expense

The Russian/CIS Assn. of Aviation Engine Manufacturers (ASSAD to use its Russians initials) held its biennial exhibition in Moscow in June.

Despite the continuous down cycle that has plagued the region's aviation since the collapse of the U.S.S.R., and the consequent economic devastation, the industry is surviving by adapting, as was evident in the 1996 exhibition, providing engines for industrial and gas/oil-line use was one method, and this is continuing. A second method evident is for the OEMs to undertake major overhaul and repair of their own products. …
