Southwest Airlines' 3-year effort to develop its own reservations system has stumbled over the rocks of a computer platform that proved inadequate, resource shortfalls and potential Y2K risks. As a consequence, says VP-Finance and CFO Gary Kelly, the target date for converting to what the company calls New Res has been pushed back to "2001 at the earliest."

To bridge the gap, Southwest has extended for "2-5 years" its contract with The Sabre Group for IT services that include passenger reservations, inventory control, flight availability information, schedules, fares and pricing. …
