Northwest Airlines faced the threat of a strike by its 6,000 unionized pilots on or after Aug. 29, following the expiration of a 30-day cooling-off period that commenced July31 when the pilot union rejected an offer of binding arbitration from the National Mediation Board. The pilots want 'an industry-leading contract," according to the union.

Adding to NWA's labor problems, its 27,000 machinists turned down four of five new contracts with the airline. …
