Northwest Airlink Mesaba Aviation and Northwest Airlines have agreed to amend their regional-jet agreement to increase from 18 to 36 the number of Avro RJ85s the Regional carrier will operate on behalf of Northwest.

The amendment also calls for Mesaba to issue a warrant to Northwest for the purchase of 1,435,230 shares of Mesaba Holdings common stock at an exercise price of $21.25. The next 18 aircraft will be placed in service tentatively between January, 1999, and August, 2000.

More significant perhaps than the increase of jets to be operated by Mesaba is the timing of the announcement. The ALPA-represented Northwest pilots, who have threatened to strike, claim that their jobs will be threatened if Mesaba operates jets on behalf of Northwest. …
