Philippine Airlines, tottering on the brink of insolvency, was on the verge of complete shutdown in July as its 5,000 ground staff threatened to walk out. The situation came on the heels of a costly 22-day strike in June by the carrier's 625 pilots. Striking pilots were dismissed after they ignored a government return-to-work order.

Senior VP-Sales/Marketing Avelino Zapanta said the airline plans to dispose of 40 of its 54 aircraft in a radical downsizing operation that would leave it with only four International routes and 14 domestic operations. …
