AIRLINES JOIN ANTI-MICROSOFT ALLIANCE

Responding to growing concern over the ability of Microsoft to come to dominate cyberspace transactions, American Airlines, the Sabre Group and the Air Transport Assn. joined an alliance of business interests called "The Project to Promote Competition and Innovation in the Digital Age,' or "ProComp."

The alliance is concerned about unprecedented concentration of control over distribution of software and software-based Internet content as a result of Microsoft's 90% market share in the personal computer operating systems.'

Concern over Microsoft's huge presence in the on-line environment is not confined to U.S. airlines. At a recent LATA conference in NYC Air Canada General Manager Product Distribution Ron LeRadza stated that airlines are uncertain whether to participate in MS-based Internet travel products such as Expedia. …
