Air Mauritius is one of the world's fastest growing international airlines. It was the No. 4 IATA airline in terms of percentage traffic growth (48.1%) from 1984 to 1985 and is likely to come up near the top again for the subsequent period. In 1986 Air Mauritius carried 212,318 passengers, 16.2% more than in 1985 and flew 809 million passenger-kilometers, up 26%. Freight carried was 3,382 tonnes, a 33.9% increase.

With a route system that includes Europe, India, Singapore and Africa (East and South), Air Mauritius carries a sizeable amount of transit traffic, particularly between Southern Africa and Asia. However, the airline's main international route is that between Mauritius and Europe with the bulk of the traffic comprising European tourists visiting the Indian Ocean island with its beautiful scenery, sandy beaches, superb deep-sea fishing and its hospitable trilingual (English, French and Creole) population of over one million.

Harry K. Tirvengadum, chairman and managing director of Air Mauritius since 1981 is an outstanding example of the group of dynamic Mauritians who have been running the island's government and industry since Mauritius won independence from the British in 1968. Under his leadership the airline has had an impressive record of profitability, the net profit before dividends for the year ended March 31, 1986, being equivalent to $5.25 million.

Fleet history

Air Mauritius is currently 51% owned by the government with another 15% in the hands of a major local business firm. Three foreign airlines hold minority interests --Air France and British Airways, 12.77% each, and Air-India 8.51%. When the company was set up in May 1968 its sole activity was handling at the island's Plaisance airport.

Flying operations started in 1972 with a Piper Navajo linking Mauritius with its dependency, Rodrigues island, 353 miles distant. …
