McDonnell Douglas launches MD-11, gets two-year jump on A340

Launching of McDonnell Douglas' long-discussed MD-11 with a predominance of European customers is seen to be more than a bit ironic as the A330 and A340 await customers.

The basic MD-11 is an 18.6-ft. stretch of the DC-10, giving it room to carry an average of 44 more passengers in a two-class confliguration over routes of up to 6,900 nm. The basic airframe MD-11 also is being offered in freighter and combi configurations. To round out the MD-11 family, McDonnell Douglas will shrink the MD-11 back to DC-10 size to offer an extended range version to stretch the aircraft's reach to 7,725 nm.

James Worsham, Douglas Aircraft president, said his firm expects a world demand for some 1,400 aircraft of the MD-11's class by the turn of the century. …
