Airbus, Boeing, MacDac all have great year

Big three transport makers enjoyed a record year in '86, selling nearly $30 billion worth of new airliners. This follows a very good '85 when Airbus, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas sold $21.3 billion worth of new transports.

The '86 totals do not include the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 program which was launched at the end of the year.

Boeing again led in units sold and dollar volume, selling 341 transports valued at $19.2 billion. Units dropped by 49 in '86, but dollar volume shot up significantly from '85's $14.9 billion. The $19.2 billion figure is an all-time Boeing high. Boeing's record unit sales were 461 in '78.

Most significant for Boeing in '86 was increased 747 sales to 83, nearly doubling '85's sales of 42. …
