NTSB safety proposals reap cautious industry support, but questions remain

The Regional Airline Association membership has endorsed all four points in a National Transportation Safety Board letter of safety recommendations, addressed to RAA, for the commuter/regional industry. RAA members were less enthusiastic, however, over parts of NTSB's second, more extensive letter to the Federal Aviation Administration. Investigations of three regional airline accidents within seven months uncovered what NTSB sees as deficiencies in regional operations and training, and in FAA's oversight.

RAA Executive VP Alan Stephen told ATW that the association developed eight points in response to NTSB's letter. Members felt that RAA needed the strongest response possible to offset negative press reports prompted by NTSB's two letters. "We have no intention of letting our improving safety record be misconstrued,' he stressed. …
