New Emirates airline causes stir in Middle East Dubai--Emirates has been a major talking point in air transport circles in the Middle East since its unexpected formation--by decree of the ruler--as the flag carrier of the Emirate of Dubai. Seven months after Dubai announced it was setting up the airline "in the best interests of the United Arab Emirates," Emirates started operations with Airbus A300 and Boeing 737-300 equipment to Bombay, Delhi and Karachi. That was in October 1985. Subsequently the carrier announced it would spread its wings to Cairo, Colombo and Dacca this spring and expected to fly to London before the end of 1986.

The establishment of Emirates has created a big stir in the Middle East because Gulf Air has traditionally considered itself the airline of the United Arab Emirates as well as of three other Gulf states--Bahrain, Oman and Qatar. …
