TA9/TA11 decision getting closer London--The supervisory board of Airbus Industrie, under its chairman Franz Josef Strauss, has taken the next addition to the Airbus "family" of airliners a significant stage further. The consortium of French, West German, British and Spanish aerospace companies, under its President and CEO Jean Pierson, has been given approval by the board to finalize the detailed technical specification for the TA9, to be called the A330 in future, and the TA11, now the A340, and is now looking for a final launch decision by the end of this year for an in-service date of 1991.

This decision depends, however, on two major factors: (1) that Al can assemble a firm customer base of, say, three or four airlines which, although not ordering large initial numbers, will have a long-term need for numbers of one and/or other of the proposed types; (2) that the partners produce promises of sufficient funding for the new projects--$2. …
