ICAO report on '84: Traffic better, safety best

World scheduled airlines had a double victory in '84, gaining a strong traffic growth while pushing safety to a level never before reached in the 40 years accident statistics have been kept by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Total domestic and international scheduled traffic increased 8.1% in '84 in terms of tonne-kilometers, ICAO said, the highest growth rate since '80. International traffic, which comprises slightly more than 50% of total scheduled traffic, increased 10.7% for passengers and 14.3% for cargo. Domestic levels were up 5.5% and 8.9% respectively.

Although flying more, the airlines of ICAO's 155 member states, excluding the USSR, suffered only 15 fatal accidents involving 224 passenger deaths. …
