Lufthansa works on German aviation, past and future

There is much afoot at Lufthansa's maintenance center near Hamburg. First a brand new amphibian turboprop rolls out of its doors; then a 48-year old airliner rolls in for a complete restoration.

The older airplane is an authentic German-produced Junkers Ju-52 transport. Lufthansa is quietly working on the aircraft in preparation for its role in the airline's 60th anniversary next year. One of ATW's crack field scouts (spies) discovered and photographed the airplane during the airplane's stopover in Bangor, Maine, before it attempted the transatlantic hop.

This particular Ju-52/3m, werke number 5489, was delivered in 1935 to Det Norske Luftfartselskap (DNL). …
