Federal Express, Newark Airport join in major cargo-handling expansion

Newark International Airport was for a long time the Sleeping Beauty of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's empire. But unlike the princess of the fairy tale, the slumberer has been kissed awake by not one but two Prince Charmings.

On the passenger side, the revivifying effect of People Express has been well documented. Now Federal Express is doing the same thing on the air cargo/small package side. Federal is investing about $39 million in a new package handling installation that will triple the size of its present facility at Newark. It is expected to be in full operation by the end of this year. The investment reflects Newark's growing importance to the carrier. It now accounts for about 18% of Federal's volume. On a typical day, two McDonnell Douglas DC-10s make two round-trips each between Newark and the company's Memphis hub, sometimes supplemented by a Boeing 727. …
