Coming of age. (Pan Am buying Airbus 12 A310-300s) (editorial)

People were talking about it at the Farnborough Air Show. They said Pan American and Airbus were talking about airplanes. They pointed out that Pan American sure needed some new transports, and Airbus had some, perhaps twenty or so "white tails" that they could deliver quickly. Airbus' Floger Beteille noted during the Farnborough Airbus press briefing that there is an advantage to white tails: "quick delivery."

But the subject of all the talk was nothing compared with what came out of the formal announcement after the air show ended. At Farnborough people were talking about some sort of temporary lease. You know, what wieh Pan Am's financial limitations, equipment needs and Airbus' undelivered airplanes it was a natural. Airbus does indeed have some undelivered transports. Middle East Airlines and VASP of Brazil, just to name two airlines, are having too many problems to accept delivery of new airplanes, hardly Airbus' fault. …
