Aircraft Operating Data this month is highlighted by first reports of Continental's reduced labor costs. continental paid $122.50 per block hour in pilot wages, fringes and expenses on its McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10s contrasted to $600 to $900 per hour paid by competitive wide-body operators. Similarly, total maintenance expenses for the Continental DC-10-10 was $156.17 per block hour, compared to costs two to four times higher reported by other airlines. continental's total direct operating cost per available seat-mile (ASM) was only 2.35^, with the next lowest being Western's 3.03^ for their DC-10-10s, almost 30% higher.

These figures clearly show the compelling economic advantage gained by Continental as a result of its improved labor costs. …
