Special report: air freight industry expects health gains in 1984.

An unexpectedly strong recovery marked the air freight side of the airline business in 1983 and is expected to continue in 1984, according to 55 airlines responding to Air Transport World's annual cargo survey.

Representing about 55% of the non-Russian world's freight ton-kilometers, the carriers replying to the survey reported that their ftks were up 16.0% in 1983 to 17.1 billion and that their freight revenues rose 11.2% to $4.8 billion. they are anticipating lesser gains of 4.9% in FTKs and 9.1% in freight revenues this year.

FTK increases of more than 20% were recorded in 1983 by Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Finnair, Icelandair, Kenya Airways, Lufthansa, Martinair, Philippine, Piedmont, Republic and Saudia. …
