Another headache.(Editorial)

Just when you thought the air transport industry couldn't possibly generate another controversy, along one comes to join the disputes over passenger rights and tarmac delays, "green" taxes and the ETS, bag fees, state aid to OEMs and, of course, whether Emirates is subsidized by the Dubai government.


The latest disagreement involves longstanding aircraft financing practices and is pitting airlines against airframe manufacturers and each other. Some 24 carriers, including almost every member of the US Air Transport Assn. plus a diverse group of European airlines comprising not only Air France, British Airways, Iberia, Lufthansa and Virgin Atlantic but also Air Berlin, Air Europa and Monarch, are complaining that export credit-supported aircraft financings are distorting competition and doing them a great deal of harm. …
