FAA promises improved safety oversight.(NewsBriefs)(United States. Federal Aviation Administration)(Brief article)

US Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said last month that FAA has accepted the recommendations from an Independent Review Team of outside safety experts formed last spring to review the US aviation safety system in light of well-publicized incidents at Southwest Airlines and American Airlines involving noncompliance with airworthiness directives.

Peters said that in line with the review team's advice, FAA "will have guidance in place by the end of the year" to ensure that "ADs and their deadlines are fully understood by all appropriate FAA officials and airlines." She added that the agency will implement "more rigorous and systematic oversight" of its voluntary disclosure program, criticized for allowing airlines too much leeway in "self-reporting" violations. …
