Both Boeing and Airbus for years have been touting the virtues and convenience of nonstop flights, and certainly in many cases nonstop routes shave hours off flight time, saving fuel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Boeing's marketing campaign for the 787 largely has been built on the efficiency of bypassing hubs and offering more nonstop point-to-point services, certainly an attractive proposition to most customers.

However, according to the Royal Aeronautical Society's Greener by Design Technology Sub-Group, the most payload/fuel-efficient aircraft is one designed for a range of approximately 4,000 km. (2,162 nm.), well short of the 17,500-km. (9,450-nm.) ranges of the two ultra-long-haul flagships, the 777-200LR and A340-500. …
