Damage caused by the fatal dive of a ValuJet DC-9 into the Florida Everglades has spread far beyond the impact site, to the airline, the halls of Washington and onward. Opportunists of every stripe have seized upon the tragic deaths of the passengers and crew to make points for themselves. So far, the result of politics injecting itself into a safety issue has been a grounded airline, the loss of the world's most important individual safety regulator and a diminution of public trust in both low-fare airlines and the ability of government regulators to do their jobs. More damage may be forthcoming.

More than any in recent history, this accident has seized the public attention due to its horrific nature, the extensive television coverage and the people positioned to emphasize the worst possible conclusions from any element of the story. …
