Uganda Airlines has turned from a debt-ridden, mismanaged past into a profitable, efficient operation ready for privatization

ENTEBBE, Uganda--"The Uganda Airlines of yesterday was bedeviled by losses, lack of employee motivation, negative corporate image, lack of discipline. In essence, lacking direction. The Uganda Airlines of today is an enterprise with a focal point of objectives, running a profitable operation and striving to improve employee motivation and discipline."

So said General Manager Benedict Mutyaba in explaining how the national carrier of the East African country is progressing in its mission "to be the most efficient and profitable regional airline in East, Central and southern Africa."

The difficulties that the airline has had to overcome have been enormous. According to the last published annual report, for 1990, the government-owned company had debts equivalent to $10 million as of December, The report, published only last September, makes horrifying reading. In it, Uganda's Auditor General notes that the last audited accounts were for 1982. …
