British World Airlines marks its Golden Anniversary with its first new aircraft and a hard-won Postal contract

LONDON--British World Airlines marks its 50th anniversary this year--and has something to celebrate.

Two major contracts have recently come its way, one of which has pushed it into acquiring its first new aircraft since its formation in 1946 as Silver City Airways. This is a 55 million pounds ($82 million) contract with Shell U.K. Exploration & Production to ferry oil-industry workers between Aberdeen, Scotland and Sumburgh in the Shetland Islands, from where they are flown out to the North Sea rigs by helicopter.
