Emirates said that the "first authorized mobile phone call made from a commercial flight" occurred March 20 aboard one of its A340-300s en route from Dubai to Casablanca, marking the launch of its $27 million program to equip its fleet with the AeroMobile system that will allow passengers to use their own phones in flight as well as send and receive e-mail and text messages.

Separately, EK said the new Dubai low-cost carrier established in March by the government "will be initially supported by Emirates during the setup period [but] will not be part of the Emirates Group. …
