"Definitely not British Airways' finest hour" was CEO Willie Walsh's description of the opening week fiasco at London Heathrow's new [pounds sterling]4.3 billion ($8.6 billion) Terminal 5 that resulted in hundreds of cancelled flights and thousands upon thousands of pieces of left luggage as the vaunted baggage system failed to operate as planned and broke down completely on the first day, March 27. Walsh said that "minor system problems" and "some basic human errors" combined to create the troubled opening. "We should absolutely have done better," he acknowledged.

Other problems encountered during the debut that Walsh admitted was a "disaster" included extremely long lines at check-in counters, security checkpoints and baggage carousels. …
