The US airline industry appeared to be on the verge of significant consolidation as ATW went to press, with Northwest Airlines in talks to merge with Delta Air Lines in an all-stock transaction while United Airlines and Continental Airlines also looked to be heading to the altar.

There is no guarantee that either combination would pass muster with the Dept. of Justice, which in the late 1990s rejected Northwest's ownership of a controlling stake in Continental and in 2001 nixed United's planned merger with US Airways.
