Dutch environmental tax challenged.(FINANCIAL RESULTS, NEW DEALS, AND REPORTS FROM EVERY CORNER OF THE GLOBE)(Brief article)

The Netherlands government is facing two lawsuits challenging its plan to levy an environmental ticket tax on passengers departing from Dutch airports from July 1. The tax is [euro]11.25 ($16.35) per passenger for most EU destinations inside 2,500 km. and [euro]45 for other flights. Airport operator Schiphol Group, together with travel agent group ANVR, are suing to -prevent the tax, while the Board of Airline Representatives in the Netherlands filed a separate though similar injunction request.

All three parties argue the tax violates the Chicago Convention. In addition, they claim the government is wrong to claim the tax is "environmental" because it serves no particular environmental purpose. …
