Any airline that earns money in 31 of its 33 years of existence is doing something right.

A carrier that does it in the US domestic market--the toughest in the world--is doing a lot of things right. That describes this year's Regional Airline of the Year, Indianapolis-based Republic Airways. Particularly over the last seven years it has established a track record of extraordinary growth combined with strong profitability. It has done so by positioning itself to take advantage of the sweeping changes that have resulted in US major airlines reducing service in favor of their lower-cost regional partners.
